Intra-articular injections (also known as 'joint injections' / 'medicating the joint') is the process of aseptically instilling medication into the joint of the horse to alleviate pain, promote regenesis and/or support overall joint health depending on which medication is being used.

Generally speaking, when a joint is identified as the source of lameness/pain the most effective way of treating the condition is by medicating the joint directly. There are various medications which can be used to medicate joints, these are briefly outlined below...

Joint Medications

- Steroids: alleviate pain by acting on the inflammatory processes within the joint, the cheapest option of all the joint medications and often the most short-lived effects. Can be combined with hyaluronic acid.

- Hyaluronic acid: alleviates pain with anti-inflammtory properties as well as supporting and promoting cartilage health.

- Polyacrylamide Gel (PAAG): (e.g. ArthramidVet) hydrogel molecules that act to regenerate and support the synovium of the joint space as well physically providing more 'cushioning' action to the joint. A more expensive joint mediction option with profound benefits.

- Stem cell therapy: the newest and most expensive medication we can use for joint medication with the most potential for joint regeneration and longevity.
